It’s not all about fighting fires! From responding to road traffic collisions to rescuing animals and supporting communities, their skills go beyond the ordinary. On-call firefighters are everyday people, responding to emergencies alongside their regular jobs and daily lives.

Here's three things you didn't know about on-call firefighters:

Not just fires

On-call firefighters also respond to road traffic collisions, water rescues, and medical emergencies. They play a vital role in community safety, delivering fire prevention advice and supporting local events. Their skills and training extend far beyond what many people expect.

Ready for action

On-call firefighters carry an alerter and must be ready to respond whenever it activates during their shift. They balance this responsibility with their day-to-day lives. They also complete training one evening a week to maintain and develop their skills.

“Be there in 5!”

Nearly half of Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s firefighters are on-call, responding to emergencies from home or work, which must be 5-8 minutes away or less from the station. This ensures a fast response in rural areas and small towns.
